How is anybody here going to have experience with it first hand? Amost all people who own e90s take the car in when it needs service. Not many owners are diy. Replace both selenoids and be on your way. Also do an oil change.
Sounds like a lot of E90 owners are lazy:-) I have only taken my car into the shop for the water pump after it failed on the way to work and that wasn't by choice. If I can do it myself without have to buy $3000 in special BMW tools I'll do it myself.

Yeah.. Some of them are really awesome... Windows up with the key FOB is the most wanted option.
Did that to myself to my 2006 E90.....love it. You can put them down also with the FOB.
So I was getting a single 2a99 shadow code being stored in the DME. In reading a few threads on various sites people recommended pulling the VANOS solenoids, cleaning, then swapping locations. I completed that a few weeks back and all seemed well with no new codes being stored. Well today I decided to scan for codes and found I am now getting the 2a98 and 2a99 codes. In talking with a couple people they are recommending that I replace both solenoids. My biggest fear is I have a bearing ledge issue, but that seems to be more common in the N54 engines and not the N52 engines. I was wondering if anyone on this forum had some advise to share in resolving my issue before I spend $220 on two new solenoids for my 2006 E90. Thanks.
If you're gunna do both, prepare for a day or two (pending on how hardcore you wanna be) of the car to be down. I normally take awhile on my own car, cause I'm a pussy. But when it comes to working on other peoples cars, I can fly through stuff. But doing 2 wheel bearings, (depending on your mechanical/hands on level) can take a while.. So if you have a back up vehicle for DD/grabbing parts. That'd be super helpful!

I am planning on 6 -8 hours for both bearings. I do have access to a full hoist and tools, so that will be helpful. I will have all the parts pre-ordered and available. I am ordering 2 bearings, collar nuts, and clips. I may buy a couple of extra bolts for the half shafts just in case.
Yeah if it moves in any direction then the bearing is bad or going.
Would it be best to replace both bearings?
UPDATE: Well I swapped my Winter tires for the Summer tires. During that process before taking the wheel off I grabbed each wheel at 12/6 and 9/3 and push/pulled at each position. The rear passenger wheel had a bit of play in it. Specifically it had play if I push/pulled from the 12 o'clock position.
Would it be safe to assume that I have found my bad wheel bearing in the rear passenger side??

I suppose I should add this as well. I run spacers. I have 18mm in the rear and 12mm in the front. Can that be an issue for pre-mature bearing failure? I have since taken them off however.
I am curious, how long to the bearings last on BMW's on average?
Well when I went to pick the kiddos up from school today I kinda weaved back and forth on the road at about 55. You could really hear the "whrrr" sound when I would turn the wheel to the right. I was going to put the Summer tires back on and see if their is a difference. It is just odd that it seemed to start in the last week. I had not noticed the sound up until then.
Hi all!! Its been awhile. So I was driving home the other day and heard a "whrrrrr" sound coming from the back end of my car. It seemed to change pitch with speed and was most noticeable at around 40 mph. My initial diagnosis is a rear wheel bearing. The rear diff should be good considering I just did the fluid in that back in October using Redline. The car is about to click to 85k miles. If it is a bearing, does anyone on here happen to have the BMW tool for working on the rear bearings? Would be willing to pay to rent it for a weekend. Thanks gang!!

What is the most problematic aspect of changing out the VCG? I really need to look at doing this myself since I have no funds to pay a shop.

Damn. You should talk to TJ. He was a hook up for dent removal. I had at least 4-5 very large dents removed plus at least 6-7 smaller ones all for $50.
Well Zing-A-Ding was cheaper then Dent Dr., but definitely not cheaper than TJ.
Thursday I had Zing A Ding come by and fix like 6 dents in my car. Did a great job!! Cost was like $180.

LoL wow. Well its not 2 years. its 12 month part warranty. But even if a indi shop does it and uses bmw factory parts the parts are still covered 12 months. Bet you just did a water pump and not a thermostat also correct? I could of done the job for about half that.
Yeah I am sure you could of saved me some money, but considering I had broken down on the side of the road and the dealer was the best option. I had no alternate transportation either. They did in fact replace both the pump and stat.
Yes. $1200, but have a 2 year dealer warranty.

P.S. My winter wheel/tires I got from you have been serving me well.
Seems my issues will never end:( This morning I was parked at a slight incline. I turned the engine off and ran inside for less than a minute. I came back out and started the car and got a waft of burnt oil smell from the vents. It dissipated in less than a block and never came back after that.
Now if you have been following my other threads over on E90post I recently had the water pump replaced after it failed on the way into work. Could my little incident be related? Could it just be the valve cover gasket at 80k? All input is appreciated.
I would like to mention that the plugs were replaced in the last couple of months with the old ones looking fantastic for having 70k+ on them. I also changed the oil filter housing gasket last year.
