I have always done them under the axle nut like shown in the picture.
As you tighten the axle nut  the lock plate crushes down and prevents the corners of the axle nut from rotating past them until you pry them open

Whoever did mine did them wrong then. Because the lock plate was definitely behind the nut.

I will gladly beat the shit out of them from pure frustration tonight

Makes sense to put them on after to bend them to the shape of the hex though

you are smoking crack that picture clearly shows the lock plate on top of the nut. how does a flat plate crush down? the back of the axle nut is round, not hex.

you shouldnt be torquing your axle nuts down without the subframe installed and the weight of the car on the wheels/hub IIRC. i don't know if it would even be possible, they get torqued to 180ft/lbs or something, you will have to hold the axle somehow...

Good thing I have deep sockets, a big hammer and the right mental attitude regarding lock plates

ignore brian, he's on crack like i mentioned before.

since when is real oem an accurate assembly guide? i suppose brian must have two stacked 5-lug front rotors on your e30 as shown in this diagram:

but it I mean I definitely agree with the strategy of using a hammer. I'm not sure a project is actually a project without using one.

Brian, my tuning pitchfork is currently resting in the garage.
I shall brandish my axle nut shovel for this discussion.

You are an engineer, and it saddens me that you are subscribing to the theory of the lock plate being used as a washer to ensure the nut doesn't rotate. In your assemblies do you not use lock nuts when you are doing sheet metal? Because the sheet metal would deform and capture the nut, in your theory.Though that depends on the type of metal used.

I could easily remove an axle nut with the lock plate behind it. But if you put it on the proper way (over the nut) you cannot even get a socket on it. That bad boy is locked in there.

                                ...

FWIW: mine were put on incorrectly by the PO. ("Washers" behind nut) I spun them off with an impact, bent tabs and all

Jet fuel cant bend properly installed lock plates.

I will procure further evidence of proper lock plate installation

Step 1: Install Nut (Torque to a gazillion ft/lbs)

Step 2: Place washer "over" nut aligning tabs

Step 3: Beat repeatedly until fully seated

                                        DUN.

^ agreed. To end this all, my compact rear wheel bearings were original and the locking plate was smashed on over the nut=)
