Finished up another little side project. A rebuildable viscous coupling. First started with cutting a burnt out one open on a lathe. 

 

The basic idea was to add an extension to the VC barrel for the addition of an o-ring groove and a snap ring groove. After taking a few measurements I mocked everything up in autocad. I rough machined the ring from CA40 420SS and welded it to the VC.  

The cover that was removed from the VC was machined to the max ID of the stator plates. Then the VC extension was finish machined for a 0.001"-0.003" loose fit to the cover. Then the o-ring and snap rings were added.

Saw a few e28 and this e21 in Paris, France with a 318 and ///M badge on the back lol

The first day in Luzern, Switzerland I saw an e30 m3 and 2 verts. The second day I saw my first touring  and it was an ix! :'] Literally the cleanest e30 I've ever seen, you could perform surgury on the underside of this thing.

Also stumbled into Mr. KaiserRolls in Salzburg, Austria haha. Sie machen ein verdammt gutes Bier!

Got home and opened my gift! An original 1988 325ix sales brochure, in mint condition! Perfect gift, thanks Joe!!

Just read the last 8 pages... life seems so much simpler without those 12 extra valves haha

I was down in Arkansas for work, browsing craigslist when I found something I had to have haha. 12.5hrs on the uhaul later and it's looking pretty in my garage! Will add more details when I get the chance.

Took the M5 out for it's first real shake down after work today, everything appears to be functioning as it should! I followed this guy for a while but never got the chance to assert the fact that 5 is more than 3 lol. ...I feel like I should know who this is haha.

And I didn't die!! Haha, I did two laps in a prepped Fiesta ST from RSR Nurburg. The track was like an ice rink and it was pretty terrifying knowing how much it was to replace the car and the armco barriers, but it was an absolute blast! 10/10 will go again.

I wish I would have known about this site a long time ago. I was so desperate last summer to go to a car show I took my ix to a classic muscle car show. I didn't feel very welcome lol

Sooooooo... last week I accepted a job offer in Sussex with Rotating Equipment Repair...   WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! I was in Milwaukee yesterday looking for an apartment and found one I really like with an attached heated garage (was the deal maker) in the Broadway Commons apartments southeast edge of Waukesha. I start October 13 but the apartment wont be available until the 15th so I'll have to stay at a friends house for a few days then my parents will bring a uhaul with all my stuff from Minnesota on the weekend. very exciting   Looks like I'm going to be an OFFICIAL WIBIMMER haha

Saw my ix for the first time in months, back in Milwaukee!

Still haven't decided what to do about the head, but this came in the mail on Saturday. I freaking love it.

Small update! The timing chain guides are done, just about to drop the front sub frame to do the rod bearings. It was a pretty scary sight as I pulled the timing chain covers. The plastic cover on the center guide was broken up and completely gone. The chain was riding on the aluminum base of the guide and actually contacting the lower timing cover.  Luckily it doesn't look like it was running like that for very long, probably the majority was me test driving it and pulling it on/off the trailer. All of the guides, tensioners, chains, and seals have now been replaced and the top end is pretty much back together. It should be interesting to see what the old rod bearings look like after 150k. They'll be replaced with WPC treated bearings and new rod bolts, hopefully then I can get this thing back on the road and enjoy it!
