The car is in "0" but maybe the clutch isn't disengaged.

The car should start with the hood open but you can't shift it into gear.

I have 12.4 volts at the battery in the trunk and started.

I jumped the starter with a screw driver and it works.

I feel it's the key not talking to the car. There is a name for the system but it escapes me. I'll also make sure my slave shaft is sitting on the fork.

I might be able to get a house call for bleeding the system as a mechanic owes me a favor.

Got some new bolts for the v-brace, oil cooler line engine mount and new o-rings for the oil cooler.

Most importantly got a new key. Hopefully this will start the car.

Is it still in "0" gear or is it in neutral?

Maybe if the starter would apologize for what he did then the SMG would talk to him again... if only the starter knew what he did wrong.

Replace "starter" with "husband" and "SMG" with "wife"........

                My issue:

The trans is physically in neutral and still in 0.

                - Brand new key from BMW.
                - 12.4 volts on the battery.
                - The starter works fine and turns the engine over after testing it.
                - Replaced the salmon relay with one I know was working.
                - No blown fuses, #14 & #30 are good and tested good.
                - Hydraulic fluid is filled topped off in the reservoir.
                - Hood is closed.
                - SMG shifter unit tested and is sending a signal.  (Flashes 0 and doesn't go into 1 or R)
                - New clutch installed.
                - New transmission shift springs.

The car won't start or shift out of 0 into 1 or reverse.  Yellow SMG light is on and it just flashes 0.

A BMW tech came over and hooked up the computer and there is something not talking to the starter telling it to start.  Should I have him reset the system?  Bleed it?  Bad slave cylinder?  I think the SMG system might have been upside down and leaked some fluid from the reservoir hole.

There was water in my SMG circular connector but I cleaned it out and sprayed electrical connector cleaner all over it and blew it out with an air hose.

                Please help!!!

Does the trunk have to be closed to start it?

It does not start with the trunk closed.

The SMG pump primes just fine when the car is unlocked.

                            Did that to no avail.

I feel the smg is preventing the car from starting.

A friend let me borrow his computer with the DIS and INPA software. The labtop turns itself into a virtual machine but it won't connect to my car.

Thing won't shift into gear. Flashes 0. Not sure what's up. I know if measures the psi on the slave to make sure the clutch is disengaged.

Hood is closed. Hood latch sensors plugged in. Ugh!!

Matt from Urban Motorworx came over. They key chip is talking to the computer. Getting a failure to start.

The shifter is outputting a signal. Switched the smg relay from the old motor that I know works.

                                  Fuses 14 & 30 tested good.

                                  SMG fluid is topped off.

I cleaned off the smg harness connector. With electrical cleaner. It had water in the connector and protective cover.

                                  Oil level sensor?

I think the smg needs to be bled because it isn't shifting into gear when the key is on.

Is a traditional 6spd a huge endeavor to swap? Im sure the dealer will get this all sorted out quickly but just curious if the swap is more hassle than its worth/better off buying a non-smg

All I would need is a bell housing, a third pedal and shifter linkage. Probably some other odds and ends. The gearbox on the smg is the same as a 6 speed.

Want to keep the smg so the wife can drive it.
