I think got my answer from Penske Parts and this is the breakdown of what I found:

#11517546994 - No longer available since 2007-02, superceded by 11517563183

My belief would be that if Penske Parts couldn't sell it to you, I would hope that BMW stopped using those part numbers in manufacturing by the dates they were no longer available, if not sooner.

I'm doing some research on the infamous water pump issue that E9x cars seem to have (which apparently plagued the  E46 too).

I found information that non-turbo E9x cars used three different part #s for water pumps:

#11517546994
#11517563183

#11517586925

I didn't bother looking at water pumps for the N54/N55 becuase it's already been established that the water pump was definitely updated for those engines.

My assumption is that the part # at the bottom is the newest one. I'm not sure though what model/year E9x vehicles used which water pump. I'm trying to figure this out because my assumption is the newest part # is a revised, more robust part that is less likely to fail and I just want to see if it's possible to determine when BMW started putting these in cars from the factory.

All I know is that the bottom part # is what you find at places like getbmwparts.com or ECS Tuning, so I would hope it's the newest and most durable part.

Does anyone know where or how someone can figure out what models/years used which part #? I've tried looking on Google and on Bimmerpost, but I've had no luck. I posted in this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=807187&page=9 but no one has replied with an answer (I understand it may be difficult to get one). Someone did list some models and years with the part numbers, but I have no idea where they got their information and my assumption is that the models and years they listed are simply cars that can use that part #.

I know this is all just a theory, but I'm just trying to find anything that might give some people more clarity on the situation and hopefully some peace of mind for not only myself, but others. Many of these cars are used as everyday drivers and even for long distance trips. It could be dangerous for the engine to shut off with little or no warning due to a failing water pump.

Like all of my mods plans, they're more or less on hold probably until next spring, but I'm just gathering ideas. I'm just trying to save money because of other stuff going on in life right now, haha, so car mods were among the first things to be put on hold.

This is my list right now:

• Shadowline trim
• Matte black kidney grille inserts (or gloss if I go with gloss shadowline vinyl)
• Angel eye LEDs
• BMW Performance Exhaust (this one obviously being the most expensive)

A quick search showed that tint shops could potentially do this too, so I may end up seeing how much that costs. I'd rather have it done right, even if it costs me a bit. I'll definitely report back here if/when I get it done.

I'm curious to give it a shot. I'd like to put blacked out kidney grilles on my car, but I don't wanna do it until I've at least covered up the chrome on the window trim. I just think the car would look weird as a whole to have the chrome kidney grilles be black but the window trim still be chrome.

Has anyone applied vinyl to their window trim before? Was it easy? Heck, I'd even be willing to consider having a local indy shop do it if it wouldn't be too expensive.

Jeff, thanks for looking in to it! I think you pulled 12-15-12 though. My car doesn't have auto start/stop (which still seemed weird to me with the loaner X1 I had, haha, but it was fine). SIB 12-21-12 was the one done on my car. No real rush to get the info, again, I'm just interested to know more about it.

Hey, so I got my car back from the dealer today and the issue seems to be fixed. They kept my car overnight to try out a cold start. Tomorrow morning will be when I get to test it out myself, but I'm confident it got fixed. Thanks Concours!

The invoice says the following:

"C REPORTS ROUGH IDLE UNTIL ENGINE IS AT OPERATING TEMP

25412 DME SOFTWARE PER SIB 12-21-12. INTERROGATED VEHICLE FAULT MEMORY BUT NO FAULTS STORED. FOUND SIB 12-21-12 RELATED TO CONCERN, UNFAVORABLE DME SOFTWARE. PROGRAMMED VEHICLE WITH ISTA/P VERSION 39.4, INCLUDING CAS MODULE, PER SIB 12-21-12. AFTER PROGRAMMING CLEARED FAULT MEMORY AND TEST DROVE VEHICLE."

Seems like there's a service bulletin for it. I couldn't find much about it online as I was hoping to find out more about it. Anyone have any connections that could get more detail on SIB 12-21-12? I'm just curious to know more, but no need to do anything to get info on it if it'll get anyone in trouble.

I went ahead and brought the car in. It needed the brake fluid and cabin air filter taken care of anyway. I described the symptoms I've mentioned in this thread, so we'll see if anything is found! I'm overall not that concerned about it. Performance seems unaffected (as far as I can tell). I'm just a bit worried because there's new noises that I don't recognize.

Side note, I got a nice X1 as a loaner. Very nice! I'm not much of an SUV guy, but it's one I'd consider if I were in the market. 8 forward gears still boggles my mind a bit. It was weird when I tried going in manual mode with it. That turbo I4 is impressive. It really hauls!

Thanks for looking in to it! I'll just have to see if I can find it. The way the car behaves when it starts cold doesn't give me much time to find the noise, so I wonder if the changing weather has something to do with it. It's getting more humid out, etc. It used to idle and whistle for at least maybe 40 seconds to a minute, but now the revs drop down to 900 where it doesn't whistle anymore in what feels like less than 15ish seconds.

My car will hardly be interesting compared to others, but I'm always up for looking at some nice cars and talking about them!

I might take some time after work tomorrow and check stuff out under the hood with the engine idling. But yeah, a diagram would help if you could get one and point out the items I should be looking at.

The sound only seems to be present when it's idling at 1k-1.1k RPM though, so I dunno what I'll find if it's idling below that.

I know the service department (and its people) at Concours is nice, but I'd rather avoid wasting anyone's time with a service appointment if I can figure this out on my own or if this isn't even a real issue.

The car seems to be behaving better in the mornings. It knows I scheduled an appointment!   It still makes the whistling sound, but the RPMs settle from 1k RPM down to 900 faster than before.

Is there a diagram I could look at to make sure I fix the right thing? I know a good amount about cars and how they work, but when it comes to working on them, I don't have much experience beyond swapping out wheels/tires for the winter and changing air filters.

Makes sense. I checked the car again just 10-15 mins ago after it sat all night and it did the same thing. The RPM variation while idling is very small, maybe just 50-100. What was odd this time is that it didn't sit at 1k-1.1k RPM for too long, it dropped back down to 800-900ish RPM fairly quickly whereas it normally idles at 1k-1.1k RPM for at least 30 seconds or so. It still made the whistling sound though, and it only seems to happen at right around 1-1.1k RPM, not below, and not too far above (my guess is the engine noise drowns it out when it gets above 1.1kish RPM).

I'm going to try and record a video to show to the service adviser in case it helps.

Sweet, thanks for the feedback! I figure that since it is under warranty, I might as well. My car is actually CPO, so it's covered until Sept. 2015. It's my first BMW, so I'm still not fully aware or used to all the random characteristics and whatnot. I just want to make sure everything's all right and keep this car running as long as I can! I like having the NA I6 and hydraulic steering!

As for the oil, I don't think that should be the problem. Concours changed the oil when I took the car in, I think it was sometime in April, to get the seatbelt gladhand guy on the passenger side fixed. But yeah, I hear ya. It's been fairly warm, so ambient temps wouldn't necessarily contribute to a slow start/rough idle in the mornings like they would on a winter morning.

My car seems to have a few symptoms that concern me when it comes to cold starts.

I don't think they're major as the car seems fine once it warms up, but I'm worried it could lead to worse issues later on.

Basically, when the engine is cold (especially after the car's been sitting all night) I get the following symptoms:

• Slight hesitation to start, takes longer to turn over
• Rough idle, RPMs may jump/fall 100-150ish RPM
• Whistling sound from engine bay
• Ticking sound (infamous valve tapping issue with N52s?)

None of these symptoms are present once the engine is warmed up or if I start the engine after it's been driven for a bit and it's warmed up.

Anything I should be worried about? I made an appointment at Concours BMW on the 11th just in case. More fun with the electric steering and thrashy 4-cyl F30 (or whatever else I might get)! I do actually like the F30 a LOT. Those two things, steering and engine noise, just need improvement. That 4 cylinder turbo really does haul ass though. By the way, I am by no means complaining about having a new BMW as a loaner vehicle, haha. I really do like it!

Thanks for the offer! I'm not looking to modify the lights for a while though. Performance exhaust is definitely going in first, and I'm not even sure if I'm gonna do that one this year yet, haha.

Haha, I thought about it, but to add more detail to the story:

I got my flat tire in Warrens, WI as I was headed west to the twin cities to visit a friend. Sidewall was busted open, damn random pothole on 94. I credit the runflats for helping the situation by keeping the car controllable with the sudden loss of tire pressure. A loud thud from the pothole, I swear it could have knocked my teeth out, a couple seconds of cruising, a pop and a hiss, and then a rough ride. I was able to limp a mile to the Cenex near Three Bears Lodge.

I waited quite a while for the tow, about 1.5 hours and an additional hour on top of that for my cab. I picked up my rental and got to the twin cities 5 hours later than planned. I drove the rental all weekend and came back to Milwaukee late on Monday 4/29. Stopping in Madison on my way back Monday evening wasn't going to work because of commitments I had on Monday.

So I drove the rental to work on Tuesday, and left for Madison right after work to pick up my car. I had to drop off the rental and then take a cab to Zimbrick to pick up my car.

Needless to say, nothing against the Madisonians, I just wanted my car back and to get home after all that, hahaha.

Hmm... tough call. The BMW LED lights are much cheaper, but people have had mixed issues and there seems to be other problems with the consistency of quality.

LUX just released an updated version of their lights, but they are of course, rather expensive. The quality seems to be much better though and far more consistent.

I think I'll just eat the cost and pay more for the LUX. There's a lot of stuff going on in life right now though, so mods will probably have to wait until this fall at the earliest if not next spring.

I just wanna do a couple things here and there:

1. LUX AE lights

2. BMW perf. exhaust

3. BMW perf. intake (very big MAYBE)

Off topic, to jack my own thread, I seriously love this car! I had a situation with a flat that required a tow at the end of April, but other than that, it's been nothing but fun! I will add though, the fact that I got my flat and pulled over in Warrens, WI DID NOT help the situation, haha. My car was towed to Madison and I had to cab it to LaCrosse airport to get a rental! If any of you are wondering, Zimbrick BMW in Madison was very nice. I sat in the E92 M3 they had on the showroom floor too. I want it so badly, haha.
