Officially got the car today. We were supposed to just see the car today and go to the bank in the morning, but as soon as the seller met me and talked to me in person, she realized I'm not a shitfuck and I actually do have the ability to pay her for this car. She signed over the title and accepted my check on the spot. She paid for a hotel so that I can get a good early start driving back tomorrow at like 7 a.m. EST and still get home at a reasonable hour to Hartland. This car is unbelievably clean. I cannot think of a time where I have seen a nicer used car that wasn't a garage queen or restored. Every panel has plush red paint, no scratches on anything. The exterior is basically perfect other than the expected front bumper rock chips but even those are few and far between.

The interior is, well, it's like new. The extended leather covering everything is all in perfect condition. I seriously cannot stress enough how happy I am with the condition of the car. I will have it at the October 15th cruise. My 135i may also be there as I am selling it on Saturday to a local friend who may be joining us for the cruise.

For those who don't know, it's a 2011 6MT (obviously), CF roof, comp package, and all the options I care about - extended leather, enhanced sound, tech, and heated seats.

    Mod Plans:
    - I am currently in the process of buying a full Eisenmann race exhaust used from a guy for a very good price
    - blacked out kidney grill and side gills
    - black front splitter
    - carbon fiber trunk lip
    - M5 shift knob
    - .....darker wheels when I have money again. I'm fucking broke now lol.

Without further ado, here are the pictures from in-person.

I agree, part the van and get something else. Nobody needs to own something like that.

Started on the install process on Saturday and by Sunday I was ready to mount the supercharger, then I noticed that I had received the wrong belt from ESS. They shipped me a belt for a 650 kit with 7 ribs instead of 6. I sourced a comparable belt from Napa on Sunday at 2120mm which is just 5mm shorter than what the normal 625 kit includes. They are overnighting me the correct belt so whatever I'll swap it tomorrow.

What's more troubling is that ESS also gave me the wrong tune file. It is fortunate that I am DIYing this install because I don't think even a reputable BMW shop would have recognized that the tune file name ended in "124" which is what ESS uses to identify tunes intended for their black fuel injectors, as 124 is the last 3 of the part number. They shipped my kit with white injectors which have different flow rates and has a different tune. DOn't ask me why ESS has changed injectors over the years - the power is the same regardless, the tune just needs to be calibrated for the right flow rate. I'm sure if I had a shop install this, I'd be driving around wondering why the fuck my car is running like dog shit and potentially leaning out.

Turnaround was quick and I got my updated tune file from them today for the white injectors that I have in my kit. So now I think all is well.

I'm 98% done. Should be driving the car tomorrow - the only things left to do is hook up the air filter, put the radiator fan shroud back in, top the coolant off, and start the car.

  • ILC Back in a BMW Daily
    i_love_carsI i_love_cars

So after 2.5 years with an S4 pissing me off constantly due to half-baked features, I am back in a BMW. Picked up a 2021 X5 40i fully loaded with the exception of no traffic jam assist package because we have no real daily rush hour commute to deal with. The car had to be ordered to spec because people usually make poor decisions when they order these things, so nationwide dealer search showed literally nothing that matched exactly what I wanted. Crazy fast turnaround time since X5s are being built in North Carolina now and not shipping over on a boat, so it took about 3 weeks from the time of order until pickup at Umansky.

Initially I went to IA since they were close, just to test drive and figured deals would be competitive regardless of what dealer I talked to because we're talking about a new car which levels the playing field quite a bit compared to the used market. This was just as big of a mistake as any one of you reading this would expect. Total horseshit. The sales guy we talked to was 3 months into the job, younger guy, unfortunately did not know about the bad reputation that IA has. I sent my spec to them, came in to chat, and they basically just offered me the current BMW incentives of $3500 total. So the car was 79k sticker, minus 3500 leaving it at around 75.5 for the raw purchase price. I looked at TrueCar and found most people around me are paying 74k for a similarly spec'd example. I talked to the sales guy and explained several things which I thought were well-reasoned arguments to lower the price. The first being that the going market rate is 74k, not 75.5. Also, they tell me they can't keep X3 or X5 on the lots and most of their sales are order/pickup. I said ok but you have 3 X5s on the lot right now as we speak, plus an X5 50i in the showroom, plus 2 of 2 allocations waiting to go into production this week that are not yet spoken for. That's 6 X5s that you don't have sold. Who is to say that your 2 allocations get built and don't also sit on the lot? You have an opportunity to lock up a sale right now for one of those if you would just be realistic about price. Plus I'm giving the dealership the financing kickback. So the sales kid goes back to the manager and as you would expect, the manager wouldn't budget at all because he's a piece of shit. Refused to even bother to negotiate in good faith.

So I called Umansky and immediately they got me a quote for 73,600 on the same car. I mentioned it to IA just to let the sales guy know that I wasn't wrong or blowing smoke up his ass when I said the car would be had for closer to 74k, and he was asking if he could talk to his manager about this offer from Umansky and try to earn my business. I said no, now you get to the learn why it sucks to be a sales guy with a shitty manager, because I already gave that jagoff a chance to negotiate in good faith and I presented fair reasoning in regards to your volume-based business. There is no more opportunity. I'm just going to buy the car from Umansky because they didn't try to jerk me around.

So anyways, onto the X5 itself. The G05 generation is an insane jump up from the prior gen, and very much needed for BMW since they were starting to fall behind in the mid-size SUV race. The G05 really steps it up and puts it back on top as the overall best choice. I watched a ton of reviews and cross shopped it a bit and while the XC90 offers more luxury, the performance driving dynamics are not there compared to the X5, and the Mercedes GLE doesn't have the driving dynamics that the X5 has, nor the quality of infotainment. This thing feels really good and offers enough customizability in the transmissions, steering, suspension, and engine that it's fun for me to drive as well as the wife. The tech works way better than my Audi. Gesture controls and voice activation are spot on, the fit and finish and upgraded leather are supple, the massaging seats are way above what I got with the audi, comfort access actually works unlike my S4 which 60% of the time it didn't, the kick-trunk feature actually works here...and the list goes on.

In general a huge reason I went with the X5 is because BMW is still using a lot of obvious tactile response buttons that have satisfying clicks, not everything is behind a touch screen. I have a huge problem with how so many cars these days are trying to behave like a smartphone - I don't want to scroll screens and try to tap shit while I'm driving. BMW is still doing a good job of keeping real buttons in the mix for core functionality inside the cabin. The wireless carplay is really good, doesn't cut out like other cars I have heard of that drop connection. I had to order it with M-sport because obviously I had to order it with M sport... and I am very happy that there isn't any M badging on the exterior of the car. I added the "M" brakes which is separate from the M-sport package, and that's the only place you see any M logo badging on the car. I appreciate it because it's not trying to appear to be something it's not. I did get the 21" wheels which unfortunately come with summer tires only, 275 front, 315 rear, so the last week or so has not been driven at all. But with the air ride option, M sport, extended shadowline and the right wheels, it looks really good with the factory drop on air.

I do intend to keep this car for a long time so I bought it instead of leased, and I paid $5800 for the extended BMW warranty which is 7 years or 100k miles. I thought that was interesting when you look at the cost of the car, and says a bit about how much they expect to go wrong. If you wait like 2 years into ownership and try to get the warranty, BMW will charge you almost 10k for it, and I did some rough math in my head and if you figure most people driving 10-12k miles a year, at time of purchase the 7 year/100k warranty makes sense to be cheaper, but add 2 years of time and you're still on the 100k mile limit, but now you have 9 years total ownership into the car with warranty coverage instead of 7. They are definitely banking on shit breaking after 7 years or roughly 70-75k miles, and none of it will be cheap to fix.

Overall I'm as happy as I can be I guess for what a modern BMW is these days. I do feel like the X5 is still pretty good in terms of balancing luxury with driving dynamics. Steering is appropro weighted in sport, and the car feels relatively precise even on air suspension. The B58 speaks for itself and the zf8 tuning is as good as it gets in an automatic transmission. Again, much better than my Audi, which thankfully will be leaving the stable in June.

I love this forum because you all realize the (stupid) amount of work for this swap. I'm not sure I'd do it again, but I can say that at the time i was bored because i had 0 project cars. Who knows what will happen in spring season, now.

I just tried to crank it over to prove the wiring out and we have success!  Initially the security system engaged because I didn't have the EWS pin all the way in, but after fixing that it was instant crank. The car is still on jackstands so I didn't fully let it start but it should be good I think as it was happy to try and crank over.

The only remaining thing is the fucking exhaust studs on the cat. Having a tough time getting those off in order to put on the exhaust with new hardware. So i'm open header right now and honestly tomorrow morning if I can't get them off with heat, I'm probably going to just drive the car .5 miles down the road to the local shop, give them parts, and say "here, install this" and make it their problem.

I'm excited but still cautiously optimistic because I still have to actually prove the car can move under its own power.

I blame TJ. Woke up this morning and saw that he sent me a link to a very reasonably priced 2005 M3 in the most unlikely of places - WCEC classifieds. Upon brief deliberation, we agreed to go together to the shanty one-horse town of Watertucky and see if this car had any merit.

It turned out to not be a piece of shit, in fact it was actually quite solid and fit the bill perfectly for what I was looking for in a new track car. I had almost given up hope that a reasonably priced, non-clapped out E46 M3 existed. Engine and clutch are solid, no signs of subframe cracking, amazingly the seats are like, mint for being 150k miles, and it's quite clean underneath. I will be taking the car to Efab next week for some GC coilovers and camber plates, subframe reinforcement, and refreshing a lot of the bushings. In the meantime I need to scoop some apex wheels because the wheels that came on this car are junk ebay wheels with questionable fitment.

This will be my dedicated track car and be parked most of the year, but I don't have any plans to do crazy track prep with it because I don't want to be back in the world of needing a truck and trailer. I want a car I can drive to/from the track, has cheap-ish running costs, and holds its value. I think at the price I bought this thing for, I should always be able to sell it to a broad audience if I had to and get my money out of it.

I love V8s so I hate nature. For this reason I ran the playback of the deer getting smashed by German steel about 30 times as I sit here smiling smugly drinking my coffee. It's a small price to pay, my friend, but we all need to do our part to control the deer population on the road. I salute you.

Got the car back today with all the go turn-fast parts on, subframe reinforced, and aligned at least well enough to get me home. Tomorrow I am dropping the car off at Big Bear for corner balancing and proper damper adjustments, but in the meantime it looks pretty mean with -3.5 camber in front. Will have to see how it is after adjustment but the spring rates are like 650/600 definitely a bit bouncy on the street but still the car handles 1000x better than it did before. There was a lot of tired suspension on that bitch.

Had to deal with a couple unknown things because the guibo was totally fucked and looked like it had maybe 30 miles left before it completely fell apart. Also had a stock mid section welded back in because what was on there was completely fucked, so now the car sounds normal again without excessive levels of e46 rasp.

  • E46 M3 S85 swap thread

1/8/2019 Update - I am changing the status of this to "on hold". The donor car is being parted out this week but I am holding on to the engine, ECU, CAS module, EWS module, etc. basically all the bits needed for the swap. It may be a year or two before I do it, or I may end up selling the engine for cash at some point down the road, but for now I think it makes sense to just keep the stuff I need for the swap since I can break even on the donor car purchase simply by parting out everything else. The transmission has already been sold for 2800 which is nearly half of what I paid for the car. Unfortunately my house needs new windows and a couple doors and I have stupid fancy windows that is going to cost me at least $45k to replace everything. My hope is that by sometime in 2020 I can re-consider this swap project and pick it up again.

I am still preparing for the swap by putting a 4.10 2-clutch diff in the E46 this spring since it needs a new diff anyway. This is the diff that we would be using when swapping the S85 in, and it makes sense anyway since BMW M-differentials suck horribly due to their locking being based on hydro upon slippage during a turn as opposed to any sort of pre-emptive locking like a proper LSD from diffsOnline will do.

12/17/2018 Update - I am canning this project and parting out the donor car for profit. I originally had a top-end budget of gross cost of 30k including the donor car. I have talked to some other shops who have done this swap multiple times with full OBD2 compliance, a/c, etc. like I was planning and there are some budget items that are just wrong on the estimate. Realistic gross cost should be factored at about 40k and even that may be a bit light. Our original cost estimates were based off of Epic's swaps, but that doesn't really factor in that Epic builds race cars that don't need to be emissions compliant, nor do they need to worry about stuff like ground clearance. I learned that without modifying the frame rails, the oil pan on the s85 will sit too close to the ground for a street car, so you need to do some fabrication work to modify the frame rails accordingly. I have also learned that whether it's using the E60 ECu or the Awron standalone, both are a nightmare to wire. We were under the impression that the E60 ECU would be a lot more straightforward, but I'm hearing otherwise from reputable sources.

So I am going to use the profits of the partout to pay for an upgraded LSD (my current diff is in really bad shape), and cover the cost of my BBK.

12/15/2018 Update - The bottom of this post is updated and will continue to be updated with full list of budget items for the build

I already have an E46 thread but this feels like it's going to be worth a separate post. I want a dedicated thread where I can post information about the swap as it happens and document everything.

I've been talking about a swap with E-fab Motorsports for a couple months now, knowing that a V10 in an E46 would be a dream to park next to my S65. Research has been done, and other shops who have done these swaps have been contacted for information. We know what the budget should be, and I'll be working with E-fab such that this car can hopefully be used to help promote Eric's business in the Chicago area and potentially beyond. He's done a lot of good work for me this past year and we've developed a good relationship, he's able to fabricate and has a great wiring tech so I feel like this is a sound partnership for the swap.

What is the goal? This will be a complete swap with fully functioning amenities - A/C, heat, power windows, push button start, etc. Nothing is going to be haggard or half-assed. The custom exhaust will even be valved with an in-cabin F-you button to activate/deactivate. The swap is not done with a standalone ECU/programming. The car will use the stock E60 M5 ECU, flashed by Epic and wired in to the E46 harness and dash cluster.

    Some key points of consideration:

    1. stock e46 M3 steering rack can be used with an S85 from this 2008 donor because by 2008 BMW had moved the CAS module out of the M5 steering column. This is enormously helpful because it allows the swap to go on without any suspension modification or steering modification

    2. The engine fits with no modification required to the oil pan, and stock S85 headers also fit although it is tight.

    3. Fabrication requirements are limited mainly to custom engine mount brackets, some subframe modification, and making a driveshaft/shifter assembly. A couple odds and ends need to also be fabricated like custom power steering lines which is about 400 bucks, and some custom coolant hard lines to the block

    4. A 6MT from an E9x M3 can be used in this swap as it bolts right up to the S85 block

Most of this basic info has been procured from Epic who has done a couple of these swaps, and they also provide a flash tune for the ECU for this swap

Now, on to the real exciting news - Steve at Blunt Tech posted a 2008 M5 on R3V a few days ago with only 33k miles on it, totaled due to side impact (see photos). He sent a video of the car starting right up and mechanically it is all good. Other than being an SMG, it's a perfect donor. It was only $7k which I am sure I can recoup most of by selling the Dinan exhaust, rear end, low mileage SMG, suspension, wheels, and probably the currently ruined interior to a tracksuit-wearing russian with a 530i (E-fab made up the part about the russian but I'm taking credit anyway).

The car has been acquired as of now. Sometime over the next month I'll likely be down there in the shop helping Eric part out the shit I want to sell. The actual swap work will likely begin in January/February and hopefully be done by April.

Before anyone asks the inevitable question of "what are you gonna do with your S54 engine/trans/harness?" - I don't know for sure yet, but the current ideas are this:

    1. Eric at Efab needs an engine for his E36 so we may be working out a deal for the labor on this swap by giving him my S54 parts so he can build his E36

    2. Buy an E30, do an S54 swap and rejoin the cool kid E30 crew so I don't feel out of place when rolling with TJ, or more than likely flip it on BaT for double my money and make a $10k profit which would make my entire S85 swap....basically free lol

    3. Sell it as a swap kit to a person in need who I don't deem to be a shitfuck.

For posterity, I have to post 1 pic of the E46 as it currently is. Pics of the M5 donor are below:

    IMG2350.jpg

    m51.jpg

I have talked with Efab at length and we've gathered cost information from several parts providers for everything that needs to be customized at this point - things like the radiator, ac lines, oil cooler/lines, etc. which all are going to have to be custom built. This list is not exhaustive and will be updated over time - it includes what we feel is 98% of the necessary parts for the build currently.

It is worth noting that this does not include labor costs for things like R&R the engine between the S85/E46, or labor to part out the S85, or installing the additional parts on the E46 like the new diff, trans/clutch, etc. Most of that is being given to me for free by Efab since the expectation is that promotion from this build will likely net them some new deep-pocketed customers in the future.

I have been ghosting the forums for quite a while as I've been busy with building a garage and a small attached house to sleep in, so nothing BMW-related to discuss. I hope everyone has been well in this crazy ass year we are in.

10/9/2020 finally acquired a 2007 Imola Z4MR that I have been seeking for many months now. It has been a rough search since the spec I want is not the most common - Imola over black, titanium or carbon trim, heated seats, no nav. Most of these cars are black, or have nav, and many Imola examples have woodgrain trim or a tan interior.

I had a WTB post on zpost forums that got buried in the classifieds 5 months ago, but a kind soul tagged me a couple days ago on an example that had just gone up for sale on 10/7 and it was local in Waukesha. I pretty much assumed it was going to be a shitbox because how could I be so lucky to find an example that's decent for sale this locally to me? Turns out it is a really nice example very mechanically sound, interior is very good in all the places that matter - cupholders are fucked but who cares they were clearly an afterthought by BMW in the first place. None of the usual Z4 roadster issues are present like cracking center console or busted seat belt holsters. It desperately needs to be cleaned, and my detailer will have his hands on it soon for paint correction and coating since there are quite a few scuffs and expected chips from an 07 with 80k on the odo.

The car came modded with aFe intake, Stromung mufflers, BBS CI-R wheels in 19" configuration, and ZHP shift knob.

It's interesting to drive after having owned the E46 M3 because while this car is decidedly an S54 power plant,  it is still somewhat removed because the Z4M has the same manual trans as the standard Z4 3.0, it does not have the same trans from an E46 M3. It doesn't feel the same. It's extremely fun to drive, just different.

I don't have any big plans for this car so this thread will likely die but I wanted to have it here just in case.

So this should be arriving next week:

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2003-bmw-m5-131/

Easier to just post the listing so I don't have to type up a diatribe. I stumbled across this auction which only had 3 hours left on the timer. So I scrambled to pore over the photos and documentation and come to realize this is actually a super legit Dinan car with everything except the wheels and flywheel. (dinan flywheel was installed but removed later).  lol @ $29k when the car was new in 2003 for all that Dinan shit. Even has the 3.45 differential.

I have utterly 0 plans for this car other than to get stock wheels or apex arc-8 - basically something that allows me to run BMW centercaps - and then drive the shit out of it.

Seen it. Agree on so many levels, to the millionth degree.

When I was having my engine built for my Acura by King Motorsports, I spent many hours there with their machinist and the service manager. I was one of the few people they would let come back and be part of the discussions with Webcams when we were working on a cam profile, and in general just got to be around because I was 1 of 1000 Honda owners coming through there who wasn't a complete douche.

I have been privy to so many phone conversations over just a 3 month period of being at the shop 3-4 times a week, and it's literally all just dumbass kids wanting 600 hp turbo builds for $2000 , or janky shitty ragged out Civics going on the dyno and poor Tim has to try and tune them and they gain 3 hp and kids get mad about it.

On top of that, you have people who bring their cars in for builds and everything gets done and tuned, full motor, everything, and then they don't pay. Of course King keeps the car, but that car isn't worth anywhere near how much labor has been put in at $75/hr to build it, that now isn't being paid for.

It's a shitty business to be in through and through when it comes to dealing with people. I can't agree more that the broader car community is just entirely full of shitfucks, and it is made worse by the fact that we live in a time when technology masks a lot of knowledge about stuff. So few people know anything about cars anymore, and even fewer admit what they don't know. Now take that attitude and bring your car to a shop and spout off to the people owning the shop like you know something because you found it on a forum somewhere so it must be true, and you have the average defacto engagement of someone owning a performance shop. Doesn't it sound like fun?

    Fuckin shitfucks.

definitely gotta sell my 135. I think I may be too fragile to handle the intensity of the street racing scene and potential youtube shame.

I lost 8k on this car after all the mods. Worth it to see a friend back in a BMW where he belongs.

Me putting 500 miles a year on the car wasn't going to do it justice.

That infotainment screen is indeed the worst travesty I have seen I think as far as that sort of thing is concerned. I'd rather have a non-nav unit in the car but at this point just get a modern double din for it and call it a day.

Catching up on people's build threads today after being absent for at least 6 months, and realized this hasn't been updated in well over a year.

The car went on Ohlins R/T this spring with some GC camber plates and I got rid of the factory ZCP wheels in favor of BimmerWorld's replica - the TA-16 wheels. This was mainly to accommodate a 275/295 tire setup properly, while still retaining a very factory ZCP look. The drop on the car is modest as always since I don't slam my cars, and the Ohlins retain a quality ride on public roads.

I also installed a BimmerWorld oil pan which is just a factory pan modified to accept an oil dipstick. So I now have a dipstick in my E92 M3 which I think is pretty unique.

Last week I scooped OEM performance seats as many of you already know, and they are amazing. I've put more miles on the car in the last 4 days than I have in the last month. They look great, have incredible back support, and are modestly more comfortable than the stock seats. A few months ago I also swapped out the stock pedals for some BimmerWorld aluminum pedals, and I replaced the original wood grain trim with new OE aluminum interior trim. I had my detailer apply ceramic to it before install so nothing sticks to the trim and it shouldn't oxidize over time like you see on a lot of BMWs with factory aluminum.

These latest changes complete the car for me. I don't think there is much else worth doing to an E92 that is driven on the street. I very recently was considering moving on to the F80 platform since I found a super low mileage 2016 comp pack for like 55k in Sakhir orange 6MT, but then I found these performance seats and with the addition of those, combined with the supercharger and ability to have traction now, it's hard to see what an F80 can offer other than lower mileage. My weekend cars are usually on a 3 year average of when I sell them, and this October will mark 3 years with the E92. The V8 is still impossible to beat for me so I am still planning to just continue driving this thing and replace the engine when it inevitably grenades.

  • Buying cars in yo 20's

    it's all good Jake.

Please note that when I say "you" as follows, it pertains to generically speaking anyone. It isn't directed at any individual.

What I'm seeing here is common which is posturing of this attitude like "yeah I'm set, I got it bro. I'm so successful in my early 20's working for somebody else that they give me enough scraps off their plate that I can buy X". No, you aren't set. You've accomplished nothing. You make dogshit as far as real money is concerned, and it isn't enough to ever be independent. I hate seeing kids with a 2 in front of their age who think they've somehow "made it" with their little degree and their little job, or worse - still finishing school and trying to explain to the world that they have all this opportunity and things will be so grand and perfect. Yes, congrats, you've just become like millions of other people running the rat race. Giving people the rundown on how you've stood up a run-of-the-mill modern Western life isn't impressive.

Here's an idea: rather than talking about how little is owed on a car or house, or justifying expenses of cars, all based on some small income and this little box that 99% of 20-somethings fall into - instead talk about how you're going to start a business or invest in some way that will fund your car desires 1000x over down the road. So you have a house? Houses are money pits. They are not investments. Nice to have but quite possibly the WORST thing you can do in your early 20's is to buy a house that YOU pay for. I say YOU because if you rent it and someone else pays the interest and taxes and cash flows your escrow to repair stuff on it, then it's not the worst thing anymore.

Working hard is something to be proud of. Working hard for material things like cars and houses is stupid. Work hard to become smarter about how to have the experiences you as a person want out of life

    Storytime:

I grew up playing soccer with a buddy who I still play with to this day. 20+ years. Really nice, unassuming guy. He was failing physics in high school so he started the physicsforums website as a place for people to answer questions, etc. He took that and ran with it, still went to UWM and got a comp sci degree just to have a fallback (positioning), but he's never worked for anyone beyond the age of 18. The forums took off and now he has the likes of Harvard professors contributing content. He has a 6 figure RESIDUAL income from the traffic and literally spent his entire 20's out of the USA for 9 months out of the year. Every year. all he did was travel the world and he still to this day at the age of 32 does not have to work for anyone and is currently spending summer in Tanzania and surrounding countries.

THAT is success. It's not about having X number of dollars to buy a house or cars or whatever or being "rich" - it's about having the freedom to pursue what is important to you at your leisure, on your own clock, not having to answer to someone demanding you are 9-5 somewhere 5 days a week or whatever the case may be unless you truly want that structure in your life. He was smart about what he did, rather than just "work hard" to do the "yea i'm gonna go to college and get a job and ride that one out", and now he has infinitely more freedom to do what he wants with his life, not beholden to the whims of banks, employers, or any other form of debtor.

I do very well for myself but usually all I can ever think about is how I'm going to get my next property in order to get to a point where someday I can say "I will do what I want on my own terms and I do not need this job". I really want to be able to coach soccer again, and I'd love to get enough track time where I can start instructing. I'd love to be able to travel as a software consultant maybe a couple months a year helping companies understand architecture that really want to learn and better themselves, rather than be tied to some elitist investment firm like I am now who favors politics over progress. I'd love to have time to help young entrepreneurs get started, even help bankroll them or fund ideas because I personally know how hard it is to get capital to pursue things like that. But I can't do any of those things right now because I wasn't smart until age 25 when I started getting properties for myself and doing web development outside of my day job because I knew I'd never even have a shot at some semblance of freedom otherwise. 13 years from now, when I'm 45, my goal is to be able to do all those things on my own terms. But I'm ok with that because I've defined the goal, the terms of it, what I want and how I will keep myself sane in the meantime *cough* with my modestly priced 135i *cough*.

So when I see people just starting out, who have done nothing of any merit or value yet in the world, spouting off about these typical things around cars, houses, student loans, credit cards, whatever, yadda yadda modern Western society "success" criteria - all I can think about is this:

    STOP. THINK.

You wanna work hard? Great. In your 20's when you have the time and energy to work that hard, at least put your efforts into working hard where a portion of that counts towards helping yourself in the long run. Whatever you give to an employer is making them 20x what they pay you. They bank on that. You're being utterly robbed. Don't get me wrong, I know the system needs millions of work-a-day rat race chumps who will never go anywhere in life, I get that. But at that point all your eggs are in one basket. There is an untold amount of opportunity available for people who want a less stressful life with more freedom to do the things they want if they are smart about it. Almost anybody with intelligence and skills can do something in addition to their regular job to help build themselves up a buffer and start separating themselves.

Do something for yourself in order to insulate yourself from corporations and a world that in general doesn't give a damn about you. The sooner you understand that and work towards it, the sooner you can pursue passion around cars or whatever without caring about the financials.

I know people who can literally write checks for over 100 million dollars. I'm not talking assets - I'm talking liquid cash available on-hand. And you know what? Those people who own big like that are always selling, liquidating, and moving on. That's opportunity for creative, smart people. There's plenty of ways you can be smarter where you "work hard" but you are not "working hard at a career job". and it doesn't even have to be real estate like what I am into. For example, I also am always checking out sites like Quiet Light Brokerage - they broker deals of sales of websites - everything from drop ship businesses to e-commerce to amazon re-sellers to you name it. These are things you can buy small or big, some even potentially grow and flip with some smart moves.

The bottom line is this: work "hard" but realize you need emphasis on being smart about what you're going hard at, and position yourself to react to the inevitable changes in your life. Nobody cares if you have cash to buy a car right now or how little you owe on your house because honestly that means nothing in the grand scheme of things. It seems big to you at a young age but there is a much broader stroke that everyone should keep in mind and the more money you blow on stupid shit at a young age, the less you are positioning yourself for the future.

again, let's not mix this up and make the mistake of boiling it down to having X number of dollars. Define what you want to do in your life, what you're passionate about, and then determine if you are happy giving that up to work for someone else for mediocre money that may get you a few nice-to-haves like a used BMW or a small house. Realize that every dollar you spend now moves you further away from your goal if you are blowing it on cars or anything like it.

Nobody here needs to agree with me, but in the past 8 years I've met a lot of people who are independently able to pursue what they want in life and they don't need to even talk about the costs of BMWs. I know how they did it, the underlying premise is all the same, and all I'm trying to do here is help add some perspective to people who are smart enough to realize that they have opportunity to not struggle as much. And for any of you to say you aren't struggling is a lie. If you don't believe me when I say that, then that means you don't grasp what I'm saying. Stop trying to justify to the world why you're doing what you're doing right now because of how awesome you think you've set yourself up. The unassuming millionaire in his 1988 Corolla doesn't care because he's going to spend the rest of the day on his boat staring at clouds contemplating the mysteries of the universe, without a care in the world.

yes mitch, that's what happens when you don't go to butt-fuckery events like Automotion where people put 4 foot exhaust tips on Dodge Neons.  You instead end up at legit events where people have legit cars and exciting things happen like me lighting a match to more money.

New wheels are on. I could not possibly be any happier with how they look. Fitment is really good with 12mm spacers all around. I think I am going to drop to a 10mm just for peace of mind but right now I can get a full lock on the wheel again with no rub and driving over normal bumps so far is no problem.
