People with that attitude are a big reason why the goverment/police are mandating closings and enforcing these things... if everyone listened and followed instructions as best they can it could be significantly easier to control. Don't be a 'patient #31'

Holy crap. I should really send that to a couple of my friends that are partying down south for spring break. Might put things in perspective for them.

This is scary because it's probably true.  For those unaware North Korea claims no cases of COVID-19.  Right...

We had absentee voting here starting on Wednesday. Thankfully they locked our door so no one in the lobby could come into our office, but the Clerks department bought a shitload of cheap pens so that way no one had to share a pen when filling out their ballet. And the common response to that the last few days was "what a good use of my tax dollars" (in a sarcastic and not sincere way). Those pens cost maybe a couple hundred bucks. Big picture, not even a drop in the bucket, but we're the bad guys for trying to keep people safe during this. 😒

i'd tend to believe they do have zero cases, because that sick f*ck is probably committing genocide on coronavirus diagnosed people, as pat's post suggests.

My wife works as a specialist nurse in OBGYN and was told today that due to the number of nurses going into quarantine in urgent care from exposure and symptoms they may start to rotate nurses into urgent care.  She's very upset about this and at this point says she'll take unpaid leave before doing that.  Part of me says like hell we're missing out on paychecks and another part of me completely understands why she doesn't want to put herself and the family at risk.  I can't wait for this world to go back to normal.

this is no good, and is the real problem behind the problem (healthcare system/workers falling behind and people who would have been able to recover will have no help)

we are up to nothing, and you should be too!

things we are doing to stay busy and take advantage of a bad situation: organizing/painting closets. organizing storage room bins of "stuff". painting a bedroom. working out at home. organizing computer files. doing our taxes. deep cleaning the kitchen disposal/plumbing (stinky!).

I'm keeping busy replacing a timing belt on my oldest van.  1MZ-FE Toyota.  It might be original at 215k... After the timing chain breakage I'm paranoid about it...

Edit, I'm pretty sure it is original.  My parents bought it at around 60k and I highly doubt they ever had it replaced.

We went for a walk today at one of the local wildlife preserves. We have a playset coming from Amazon - a small climber, slide, and swings. Give the kids an outlet for their energy while we can’t go to the park.

I got some good news this morning that two of the three active jobs I am working on will not be cancelled, the customers are willing to wait until my source in Illinois opens back up again on April 7th.  Haven't heard from the third guy yet.

Bad news is my wife works at my daughter's school and she was furloughed without pay when this whole "shut everything down" thing started.  So far they haven't said when they will open back up again.

I wish someone could explain to me this fixation on hoarding toilet paper.  Are people thinking it's going to be the post-apocalyptic currency?  Maybe where the single ply Scott's will be like $1's, Angel Soft $5's and the Charmin Ultra-Soft will be like $20's?  I've heard stories of black Friday style fights in Costco over cases of TP.  WTF??

Well the third customer told me he is going to try to find someone else to do the job rather than wait.  I've been down this road before and the way this industry is saturated now, odds of me ever seeing that guy again is low.  Oh well...

After that I heard from my data source in Illinois that his boss is defying the Governor's order and making them come in to work!  It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Funny if you do an online search you get everyone from new pundits to economists and physcologists laying out the assorted theories and explanations.

I summarize a few of them here and add some of my own interpretations.

The "herd mentality" explanation: I need to do it because everyone else is doing it and they know something I don't. This of course leads back to who is the TP hoarder "zero" and why are/did they start buying.

The "control mentality" explanation: The world is spiraling downhill and buying stuff is an attempt at control. Yet this is too broad and still begs the question of why buy TP versus hoard something else..

The "basic needs mentality" explanation: if I need to stock up on food and water for a period of shut-in/dislocation then I also need to stock up on TP because in the most basic biological terms what goes "in" sometime later comes "out." Since we are not a land of bidet users (and the WI sub corollary: since it's winter and no leaves on the trees as a fallback option) TP is the answer.  This argument has merit and is intensified by an array of family shut-in corollaries.

-Basic needs Corollary 1: all the bathroom "business" I used to do at work, mall, etc I now will be doing at home, so my TP buying needs increase.

-Basic needs Corollary 2: the kid(s) are home and not doing their daily "business" at school or at the neighbors or mall, so my buying needs increase.

-Basic needs Corollary 3: at the risk of giving offense stop thinking like a "guy" and consider what may be gendered differences in consumption patterns in your household (be it female spouse/SO and or kids). Somewhat re the latter I remember my younger teenage sister and her friend visiting me in college at my off-campus apartment and after leaving them alone for the day I came home to find that they had gone through 4-6 rolls of TP.   The point is given the potential "gender disparity in use" corollary to the basic needs mentality explanation, my buying needs increase.

Individually or in concert, these explanations result in empty shelves.

These empty shelves are going to result in me having to schedule my showers a bit more strategically if I cant find any TP in the next few days...

Are places really sold out? Shelves at woodmans were still well-stocked on Friday, but I haven't been out since then.

Have you tried any asian groceries? Sad in a way, but I'm sure they're not being hit nearly as hard as the big box stores...

Most larger hardware stores carry basics like tp/paper towel too. Menards even has a small grocery section if you’re into beefaroni and questionable canned goods (which means you’d need more tp anyways)
