Vert mounting m4x,m5x?

Yup i am planning on custom pan and pickup.
 

Vert mounted setup should give me more room for turbo but i need to modify e36 subframe before i test fit the motor and see if its going to fit under the hood in the upright position. 
 

I want to give that m42 some Efr treatment.

I see some issues with overall height, it's angled over to keep the hood line low.  And you can't get much lower even with a dry sump because of the steering rack.  However you may be able to tip it up a little to make more room for a turbo without being all of the way vertical.  The valve cover is not very far from the bottom of the hood in the stock configuration, like touching the hood insulation close.  Put a chunk of play-doh on top of the valve cover and shut the hood to see how much clearance you have.

i think vertical alignment will actually make the top of the motor lower, its the bottom of the motor that will be the issue. (assuming the driveline/crank centerline stays stock).

This is for an e21. My engine is mounted really low, but I probably have about 4 inches of hood clearance, and that's to the intake, not the valve cover.

I don't see any issues with rotating the trans, other than what Brian mentioned. Nothing worth losing sleep over.

Tape measure says it will fit. It just a matter of fabricating an oil pan that will have some decent volume and wont hang too low.

Option 3, machine an adapter plate. keep trans angle correct, and not modify shifter or bellhousing.

That would be easy but what about pilot bearing?  Is the input shaft long enough ? I guess plate would have to be 1/4" steel or 1/2" aluminum .

@The Full Banana made an adapter plate for a getrag to mate to one of the volvo motors.

Yup he is sporting getrag 265 mated to volvo whiteblock. 

I guess ill rotate it and if it wont work i will move to Australia. or cut the bellhousing and reweld it at proper angle whichever comes cheaper.
