Am I the only one wondering how you're going to get the metal chips out of the pan? Wouldn't have been more convenient to do this while the subframe was out for spacer installation?

Hey now, a few metal flakes never blew up an engine. I doubt it would suck any up and when it does the pump might blow but if not the filter will get um

Subframe wasn't out at any point during spacer stuff, but I can certainly drop the pan with ease now.
Leaving the oil in the pan was actually beneficial to keeping chips controlled. The chips all piled up on the sides until the bit started going through, but once the bit went through the oil kept all of the chips right at the surface and in the hole. Turned out to be quite handy. I do intend to change the oil and flush the chips out a bit with extra oil through the hole I made. Should be a-okay.

Speaking of subframes, it is really funny to walk around the car and see a massive air gap between the subframe and the oil pan.

        On to better things!
I spent some time getting the motor and pump timed. I started from ground floor on the timing and set the crank, cam, and pump at their respective TDC's and then threw the timing belt back in. Spun it a few times and it looked good.
Static timing the pump is amusing, as you unscrew a bolt in the back and thread in a dial indicator and zero it out on the largest value, rotate the crank to TDC, then read the value of timing advance, if the number isn't what it needs to be you rotate the pump in the brackets until the reading on the indicator is correct.
        Motor timing, check.

I then played the puzzle of fuel lines, which I thought would have been easier. They all fit together in one very specific way, so once I figured that out I took each one back out and cleaned it up a bit. Final result below!

        IMG20180403213807

Next step is to get fuel into everything and start bleeding the fuel system, which is a bit time consuming and can lead to headaches. Once again I want to make sure it runs before putting everything back together.
Don't worry, I'll remember to take the towels out of the intake ports... lol

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the large bulge on the valve cover for?

                Tis a vacuum pump!
Since a diesel engine doesn't create any vacuum in the intake, there needs to be a source for brakes. Many diesels use hydroboost (power steering pump) for brakes, as do e28's, even the gassers. Some run a vacuum pump on a belt, but this one has one that runs on a cam lobe on the main cam.
                Nifty stuff.

Googling e28 gasser did not give the results I was hoping for. I might have to do something about that... that would confuse the hell out of people.

@AsparagusMike showed up Friday and watched me try to get air out of my fuel system for about 5 hours, I'm sure it was amusing seeing it still not start.

I went back Saturday and loosened the fuel outlet on the back of the pump for one injector and suddenly is was moving fuel (after raising the fuel cell above the pump).
@HipMF sat and watched in amusement as I tried to get all the air out, while sucking in air bubbles and such, then tried to start it with no avail. I had vast amounts of homework to do so it had to be left for later.

It turns out that it blows perfect smoke rings out of the exhaust most of the time so that was cool.

Hopefully will have it running some night this week.

So I was really hoping to post some sweet pictures of this thing out in the insane snow storm we got this weekend, but apparently that was too much to ask for.
Got it running but something wasn't right, it would change revs on its own, there was a lot of air moving through the fuel system even though there was no air being pulled into the pump, and things in general were just being odd. at some point it was realized there was fuel dripping out of a banjo bolt that was open, as I believed it had been on the old one. I double checked for sanity and found that the old one indeed never had that port plugged or plumbed, as I thought it was a vent port.
Well it is, and it should never have diesel seeping out there. Here is a nifty cutaway to show you what port. (10)

                                          Pump cutaway

That area shouldn't really have much fuel in it to begin with, and it certainly shouldn't have fuel on the underside of the boost compensation diaphragm.

Pump is coming out and going to the diesel shop that did my injectors, along with the parts pile that is my old pump. I hope to sweet baby jesus that they can make the "new" one work with either purchased parts or ideally parts from my old pump.

                                          Can this just work please?

                                          ...
