I am going to be pulling this motor in the next few days and was thinking about doing a complete gasket kit, guide kit, etc while it was out of the car..

Does anyone have any experience with this?

The motor will be on an engine stand so that will make things easier.

Is this something I could/should tackle alone or pay someone to do/help?

I don't know your experience level but it should be something you can handle yourself.  Like anything, take your time and have all parts/tools necessary beforehand.

I am mechanically inclined. I've done motor swaps in the past, but never dug into a motor like this before with the intent of putting it back together.

I did a full rebuild on my m50 with exactly zero prior knowledge.  It's fun, I used Plano boxes with scraps of paper in the pockets with notes to keep track of hardware and lots of digital camera pictures.

Mine currently looks like this, but I will be doing the timing guides also, so further disassembly is required. Let me know if you have any questions and I would be glad to help if I can!
