It's like the Same but Different: My 528e build

Spent some time poking around the car this week trying to get it mobile for scooters. Replaced a frozen brake caliper with a random one I had lying. I tried adjusting the shifter plate in several ways and I've come to the conclusion that my transmission might be the problem as I can still only get 4th gear to engage. Either way every single part in the clutch system needs replacement on top of the shifting components.

I threw the car together to temporarily get it driving back when I first got it, so now is the time to start the rebuild now that I have a workspace for it! Tear down will start next month once I'm settled into the shop and have things organized.

so did you give up on trying to make it driveable for the weekend? or did you succeed

Gave up, I also had the truck go down after moving stuff all week. Figured it was more important to have a transport to Milwaukee this weekend. The car started up instantly after sitting for 6 months and once it cleared stuff out of the system it idle'd great. Its just not roadworthy after sitting and all the possible things that could go wrong. I have the time/space/money now so there isn't a reason to keep limping this along.

Quick update, photos will come later. Got the shifter linkage rebuilt just need to reinstall, should make quite the difference. If i can get it into other gears then I'll have the car back together hopefully getting some sleep too.

Scratch that last comment, Still only grabs 4th gear.

1. Trans is somehow bad?

2. Shot clutch only grabs 4th?

3. My mock shifter plate rear support isnt at the right height/angle.

Will it shift between gears with the engine off?  Or are the results the same?  If the clutch is not disengaging all of the way you will be able to shift with the car off but not with it running.

I tried playing arouns with this a little but before putting things back together but didnt seem like i felt a difference.

You should be able to shift gears by putting a screwdriver or something through the hole for the shifter linkage and rotate/push/pull (that's what she said) into all of the gears.

Still working out the transmission issue but good news is I finally picked up the parts Mkoepp and AndyHundley had been holding for me! Clean front end panels and a new clutch set up. Also it seems whenever I go on a parts run I come back with another car... I'll post up E30 pics this weekend.

It's not for me! I wouldn't wanna stoop down from the higher ranks of elite 5er ownership. Jk it's a great car being reminded of what driving a M20 is like along with the body panels should get me in high gear for getting the E28 rolling in spring. As long as I can get me a trans
