Do you keep a spare fuel pump with you at all times?

actually the pump failed right as the snow started to fly, so i missed out on all the fun waiting for a pump to be shipped. Only spare part I carry are oil pans and bailing wire.

i don't carry spares, that would be 'willing' the universe to break something.

I carry a pliers, a bent screwdriver, and a fuel filter in my truck.  Nothing ever breaks.  Stuff breaks if you carry zero spares.  As long as you have something with you, no matter how useless, nothing will go wrong.

Tools are different. I carry a pretty good set: sockets, wrenches, pliers, vise grips, screw drivers, tow strap, jumper cables, etc. Plus carhart bibs and jacket in the winter, rain jacket most of the year... Like JC said, as long as you have it, you'll never need it.

Never heard the pump whining, but I had a weird intermittent thing where the engine would loose power for a couple seconds, and the continue running normally. Has been happening maybe once a month or so since I bought the car. During the summer I had some hard starts that seemed to be caused by overly rich mixture(?). Also had a CEL the entire time, which went away after replacing the O2 sensor near the end of summer. A week before the pump failed I had a few random hard starts where it took maybe 30 seconds of cranking before the engine finally started normally and ran perfectly normally like nothing was wrong...  I probably have some other issue (maybe coolant sensor?) besides just the fuel pump, but such is the high-mileage life...

I had always thought that was just leaky injectors when I had it. That lasted a long time if it was a dying pump=)

                                facts of potential interest:

cost 100-200% or more dollars? 😕

If all you're doing is looking at those figures then you're missing the point of the s52.  That'd be the same as comparing an s54 and n54 and declaring the n54 a better engine.

Now place those 2 cars on a race track and tell me who wins.  Or drive them side by side and tell me which is better.  This has been played out over and over and it's always the same conclusion, M cars trump non-m cars.
