+2 on the Altimax Arctics. Good in snow, cheap, and when the roads are clear you don't have the dry squirm/float of the blizzaks.

good to see other people using those tires with good success.

Sucks about the shifter though, is it possible someone glued it on?

must be. with how tight the knobs fit already, it wouldn't take much super glue to get a near-permanent stick. i'm going to try to soak some acetone between the two to see what happens.

+3 on the altimax. That's what brooke runs and they are beastly.

        DSSR is a good find.

FWIW, I used all e36 parts on my swap in the shifter region and dont have alignment issues?

Did use the e30 rear carrier though. And also +1 to the notch feel of the z3m, I believe that is what I have. I like it :0

when setup with e36 trans + all e36 shift parts (carrier, lever, selector rod, selector joint), the center of the shift carrier is forward and right from where the stock location is. the rear bushing that holds the carrier doesn't make any difference, and has to be the e30 part anyways.

          where did yours end up?

I will check tomorrow, but as far as I know, it wasn't out of whack. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think I'd remember if it was shifted (punz) that much

Good to know about Mr P's tires with mounting/balancing for when I get tires for the e21.

well, i was unsuccessful at pulling the shift knob off. i soaked it in acetone overnight but it didn't help. I wrenched on it a little until the point when I was starting to damage it, then gave up.  until next season, i'll just leave it be.  for now, i mounted the shift boot with the lever off, then reinstalled the whole thing at once. This is 'M Rain' fabric for those unfamiliar. Matt-B on r3vlimited makes and sell the sets.

                  ocmCXQa.jpg

and all mounted in. i also had an e34 leather ebrake handle from the parts car that I threw on.

                  rQWmlHc.jpg

I test fit my wheels today. full specs on the wheels I picked up are:

                  BBS RS243 16x7 et33 (Fronts)

                  BBS RS310 16x8 et38 (Rears)

All original finish (very happy about this) is in pretty good shape, maybe a 8.5/10. some pitting around the bolts, and the inner barrels obviously look 20 years old. I'm glad they aren't perfect so I don't have to worry about them.

                  4x114.3 with 66.1 centerbore

Got some Adaptec adapters made up with the 4x100 to 4x114.3 pattern. 15mm all around (thinness available)

                  iHpIJGR.jpg

my maths were correct. et23 rear and et18 front. i got no rubbing anywhere on my test drive, which is awesome. however the adapter bolts are a little too long so hopefully they will send me some shorter ones.  front strut clearance:

                  BkoI12m.jpg

and had to get a good picture before taking off the whole setup after the test.  i'm happy with how far I've gotten the car, and I think I'm done working on it for the season with the weather swing finally here.

Lookin' good. I'm having the opposite problem with my ZHP knob. On a hard 1-2 shift, I'll throw it right into the back seat.

+54213 on Altimax Arctics. I wish I didn't receive a set of Blizzaks with the purchase of my 325xiT, but can't bring myself to switch perfectly good tires out.

Lol, I don't pull up. It's just loose after like 200 super hard 1-2 shifts during 1/4 and 1/2 mile passes.

i'd like a video of said 'throwing it into the back seat'. i can't imagine how that would happen, even with a loose knob.

and yes, TJ I have the BBS centercaps.  no point in mounting them for the test run.

I've done it before.  Not in my current car but in customers cars or in friends cars.  As soon as you go to shift on a 1-2 or 3-4 it pops off.  You don't have to shift hard for it to happen but with the right momentum the knob just comes off in your hand... Typical stock e30 shift knob has a plastic piece that fits into the groove on the top of the lever. If the knob was not installed correctly the fit is not tight. But if someone tried to twist rather than pull the knob this piece breaks off and then the whole knob can come off with a hard pull. Unless of course the PO has decided to cover up the issue by supergluing the knob to the shaft.

For me it was at a DE event years ago just after T3 at Road America and heading strong towards T4. Shifted into 4th and the knob did fly off into the back of the car. A little exciting with T5 coming up.

After the session when I asked Mary Medo the chief DE instructor about how to avoid this type of problem from happening she just shook her head, smiled and her sage advice was to be gentle and smooth in shifting rather than yanking on the knob.

with the shift boot installed, its not super obvious. its not like something is wrong, that's just how it ends up if all e36 parts are used. what I plan to do is cut the carrier in half and lengthen it, moving the position backwards towards the center. i don't care if its slightly to the right. then I can fit the stock rubber boot to keep noise/heat out of the console and not slam the cloth boot and wear it out every time i shift into 5th.
