OEM pistons for my M42 were really expensive. I was wary of the Maxsil ones, so I ordered some custom forged ones. Roughly the same price as OEM (a little cheaper actually), but they should be lighter, and you can get whatever compression ratio you want. I'd think that M20 pistons would be more common than M42, but it's still probably going to cost you.. $$$
Did you ask BavAuto about Mahle pistons? They have .5mm oversize listed on their website for about the same price as the MaxSil:

Yeah, their Mahle pistons are $200 more than the Maxsil ones. I found a lower mileage block in IL that I might just go pick up. A lot cheaper than oversize pistons.

This is the route you should go. TCD sold me Imagineering 9.2-1 pistons and has nothing but the best things to say about this guy. I guess he is a crazy mad BMW scientist!

This is the route I ended up taking.


Picked up a great condition long block from Illinois today. Once my gasket/seal kit comes in, things will start moving on this build. I'm happy about that!

Went over to Brian's (Snap) house yesterday to use his oven for my oil pan and valve cover. He Blasted them and I powder coated them. I am happy with how they turned out.

Turbo is all ready! Compressor housing powder coated and turbine housing ceramic spray coated and baked.

This is the first turbo with two actuator ports that I have dealt with. From my understanding it is so the turbo can be run with or without a boost controller. If no boost controller is used, the lower port gets connected to the compressor housing port and the upper port vents to atmosphere. If a boost controller is being used, the compressor housing port gets routed to the controller. Then from the controller it would get tee'd out to both ports on the actuator.

Wouldn't that cause it to do nothing? Maybe I am misunderstanding what is inside of it. I was thinking a diaphragm and one port is on each side of it. Just trying to understand. Someday I might like a snail.

Replaced the rear main seal on the new block last night. Now I can get it on the engine stand and start replacing the front seals and o-ringing the block once the rental tool gets here.

Just finished cutting the o-ring grooves in the block with the isky groove-o-matic rental tool.
