I have a 92' 525i with close to 250,000 miles and it is still going strong. Like John said, cooling systems need normal maintenance on m50's. I am assuming it is a 5 speed if you are saying it has second gear issues. Finding a trans shouldn't be too terrible.
The breaking point for more e34's is the rust. How bad of shape is the body in? If it is pretty clean besides having rusty doors, $1000 is a really good price.

Like others said, basic maintenance is key. Seen a good amount of E34's at the junk yard with intact rear ends, so your search shouldnt be that difficult. If the body is clean I would say go for it, E34's are nice cars

I saw the e34 you are talking about i Believe for sale in monroe if i had the cash I would of snatched it up for a drift car. Also a madtowner btw and also own a subie
