The grit question, if you were referring to which grit rating to stop at. I'd suggest close to 2K. If you wanted to get a really nice paint job. 400-600 is rough as shit.

No, I'm sanding the clear coat off of the original paint so I can paint over it haha.

Nah, take the old paint off with 2000, it will come off more evenly
