1984 BMW R100 Cafe Racer Project

Looks like I will have another project to work on along side the e21 this winter. Coworker wanted a cafe racer project to learn how to wrench, but doesnt have a garage. So I offered him my work shed and I will help him out (aka I will most likely have to do most of the work). Its an 84 BMW R100. 

This is the bike.

This is the idea of the finished product.

Should be an easier/quicker project than the e21 turned out to be at least, lol.

Motorcycle projects definitely go faster. I did my Honda CB77 while working and going to school, with almost no budget.

That looks great, Mike! Your Moto Guzzi could be a slick cafe bike too I'd think.

I remember seeing that bike online not too long ago, super cool. I’ve always had a desire deep down for a cafe racer like that.

Well ... this one may not happen now. Coworker has realized he could make more money off the bike if he cleans it up and sells as original. Will keep everyone posted on what happens.

It is here. Rode it back to my place. Very different feel of a ride from the 1200cc sportster, but still a fun bike. So smooth and quiet Tomorrow my coworker starts taking parts off he doesn't want and see where he wants to go with it from there.

Taking stuff apart doesn't normally count as progress, but I guess if it's a cafe bike then maybe...?

Also, is the front tire is on backwards?

You're not the first person to assume it's on backwards, including myself. But the rotation arrows show it's going the correct way. It's weird, I know.

front tires are put 'backwards' compared to rear tires for the braking characteristics.  braking is essentially putting a backwards rotational force on the tire, and the front tire does most of the work for braking on a motorcycle.  hydroplaning a bike is less common than a car, so water evacuation at speed is less important than safer braking. 

more common scenario: its wet out and you need to slow your bike in a hurry without washing out.

less common scenario: its wet out and you're ripped on coke and buzzing along the highway at 150mph and you need your bike to not hydroplane.

Bike is complete to the point he wants to go with it. Runs and sounds great! It's currently for sale now. If anyone is interested or knows someone who is, send me a PM.
