Anyone know how to fix steering wheel peeling?

Does anyone know how to refurbish the matte black plastic that's peeling off? In my old Chevy work truck it did this and I ended up peeling it all off but it just looked terrible after. I assume strip and resurface but what could I use that will be durable enough?

If this stuff is anything like the soft touch stuff in MK4 VW's, I made a huge mess trying to remove it and it ended up looking worse. I think I tried to use a scotch pad and acetone, and It made tar that stuck to and stained everything

I think the showing plastic only looks good because your hands sort of polish it on the wear spots, if you scrub it off it's probably matte

Lol. This is exactly why I need an expert opinion.  I doubt I would find a donor wheel or even new parts so I'm stuck with letting my OCD run wild or risk making it look worse on my own.

You won't think this works but take it apart and use oven cleaner and a scotch brite pad. You'll then either polish the part out with PlastX or paint it with some sort of durable interior or trim paint.

Clean off the old stuff and vinyl wrap it. It'll look as good as new and last much longer. I'm going to be doing the same with the wheel on my X3.

Ive heard of people totally peeling it off. plastikoting (matte) it then throwing a satin clear coat over it.
