Wheel repair?

thanks for sharing. was hoping to find a better deal as i payed less for the wheels then it would cost to straighten them.

keystone does some of the best wheel repair/ refinishing work

however just buy a lead hammer a beach towel and some 2x4 scraps plan on spending 2 or so hours on the set just work you way around the wheel slowly dont try and get the whole bend out at once just hammer a spot untill there is an improvement then move to the next spot working your way around the wheel untill its perfect its not hard its just time consuming and loud

hammer them out myself? is that safe? i cant imagine i have the ability to even spin the tires off the car to see how round they are.

If you have a level it would be pretty easy to determine if the lip has been straightened, but there's still the issue of the possibly having an oblong shape to it.

How bad are the bends?

none of the bends are terrible. only a couple are visible if you look close. but when i had tires put on, the guy who balanced them was saying he couldnt get two of the wheels perfectly balanced because of them, so i'm not sure what that means. he even wrote BAD in the barrel, lol. (out of round?)

Can you toss them in the rear w/o feeling vibrations?

well i only had them mounted for a day (too much rubbing + winter tires installed for the season) and there were vibrations in the rear, but it wasnt terrible.

Then, if the tires aren't really worth all that much, I'd try hammering them out as said above. Some people have had good luck heating their wheels up before hammering, but I'd personally be worried about the structural integrity of a wheel that's been heated/hammered on

yeah don't spot heat cast aluminum if you need to heat them heat the whole wheel evenly

Not sure I would want to hammer my own wheels to correct a bend. Leave it to the professionals.

stephano is who i talked to and got quoted 125 each. that price is fine for wheels which have some value, but for a wheel worth the same amount, i might as well use them as they are or throw em away.

Then I'd try my luck at hammering them out. Take your time, have a brewski or three, and start hammering in small spots at a time..

Fill and drill shop would be neat to find since I have a bunch of wheels that dont match my bolt pattern, but would be fun to bolt up.

Curious as to what it typically costs though. I'd imagine you'd be able to buy correct wheels after factoring in the cost of wheels plus the fill and drill.

depends on the wheel....

a set of 4x100 16" RS are pretty ridiculous expensive vs. 16" 5 lug RS. Sending the centers for fill and drill is relatively cheap. Rotiform and Memoryfab do this competently. If its a center you could ship pretty cheap Id send it out to Memoryfab most likely. But im looking to put single piece wheels on my car and shipping them would not make sense.

I know this thread is old but there is a joint in chicago that will fill and drill. I wanted to put Mpars on my 240sx and I can't remember what they quoted but it was actually very reasonable. Gomez tires is the name of the place.
