For the money I want to spend, I don't know that I'd find a decent e46.

    I've never had a e36 yet. It's an option.

I'm looking at dumping a lot of cash in an e30. Suspension, wheels, swap.... Etc. I think I'd be happier with a well sorted e30 than a mediocre e36, or a stock e46... If I can find a clean, lower mileaged e46, I may go that route. There is one on Craigslist (Chicago I think) that has low 100K for around 15.5K... But I don't know if id be happy with that.

Have you owned an e36 before?

Gotcha, makes sense. I'd say a clean, heavily modded e30 would be worlds cooler than an e36.

E36's are sweet as hell, but there are more around. I love e30's because they are few and far between. Both sweet cars though! And a swapped boosted e30 is the shit.

I dont plan on just having a stock e30... I have a few ideas. We'll see, I have to sell this M3 and then I want to find a very clean chassis.

Euro bumpers on an early model wouldn't be all that bad..

haha ok, we'll try alex... I've personally never gotten the hype about euro bumpers, I can only see a difference in about 15% of pics I see with them installed..

Are you willing to travel down south for a clean chassis? I just cant imagine finding a good shell worthy of swapping anywhere in WI/IL/MI/MN, unless you find some collector that wants $8k for his minty, low mileage e30..

Also, you should consider a turbo'd M42 2002... with 8" wide tires, roll cage, flares, and semi-stripped interior :D

                                I have no problem traveling.

I have my eye on this: http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/cto/2815248323.html

I'm leaving my options open as to what I get next. I have something else in mind but I'll leave that alone for a while...

I also plan on replacing my 325ix with something new / newer. So we'll see....

Replace the IX with a Subaru for the family/fun change-of-pace car..

As for the 318is, if you were gonna swap the motor anyway, wouldn't it be a good idea to buy a car simply for the chassis and disregard the motor's condition? Or do you need to drive it before the swap?

^ true dat. But with a 318is, most owners would swap in an M50 rather than look for a low mileage M42. Those motors are cheap enough to rebuild that they rarely get swapped.

I want a car in great shape, 80K miles probably will get me that.

We'll see. Had two inquires on the M3 today.... One hasn't responded since I replied to his message, another offered me $11,000 "cash".... Needless to say, the M3 is still comfortably parked in my garage.
