That is an early one that cracks easily.  Steer clear.  The later ones have smaller coolant holes instead of those big ones.  Also those early cars had thermal reactors on the side of the cylinder head that also bake everything to death.  It also probably has the cam to drive the L-Jet distributor not the Motronic style.

Unless you just have to have that period correct action.

I just learned something. Thank you.

That one you linked is what was on that '79 633 that I worked on.  It had headers installed and was de-smogged when brand new and it still cracked somewhere before 59k miles.

pretty interesting euro e36 m3. i wonder if the tuner was influenced by the 190e evo?

I see more e36 GTR in it than 190e evo.  That car certainly is interesting.  I'd love a euro e36 some day!

s14 e36!  i'm not real 'up' on racing and production-based homologation, but how did they get away with running a motor that was never spec'd in that chassis?

I was wondering the same thing! I re-read the description and here is a comment on that in the little blurb on its history at the bottom:

"The FIA - ST all new regulations would be based on 4 or 5 door saloon cars with 4 cylinders and 2.0 liter engines with a minimum production run of 20,000 units per year. Though the mechanical components would be relatively free of restrictions, the bodywork would be based on the road cars in its material and design."

that's pretty awesome. I also just learned there is such a thing as an s42, based on the m42. when bmw stopped producing the s14, the race teams switched to the m42 base, and later versions spit out 315hp from NA 2.0l !!!!

oh, and theres one for sale in italy for a cool 18k: http://www.moreschi.info/motori/bmw_m42.htm

The S42 is arguably my favorite bmw engine!

Jump to 0:40 to skip the intro, after that is some glorious engine sounds!

This seems expensive for an auto E30, no?

I didnt know about the S42 either. One of those in an E30 would be glorious.

"The S42 engine was a 2.0L touring car engine with a 86.5mm bore and around a 85mm stroke, which shared the same block as the street going M42. Unlike the common M42, the S42 had a more sophisticated engine management system, and had individual throttle bodies. The S42 unfortunately did not share the same valvetrain as the M42, and is a solid lifter valvetrain (possibily from the S50Euro) fully capable of over 9000rpm, but was limited to a 8500rpm redline, as dictated by touring car rules. It was mounted upright in the bay, not slanted, and ran on a full dry sump oiling system. The pistons had a static compression ratio of around 12:1, and running on pump gas, the S42 made around 280hp (and up to around 310hp later in it's life). "
