It's a 200k mile engine that was used to tow and there is no brake controller to be seen in the photos which means he grossly exceeded the towing capacity on that car. In real terms there's no way this car is not so tired that it's worth $8500. 

You're thinking of the old adage "something is only worth what someone is willing to pay" - that's not really what I'm trying to say.  "Worth" as I put it is probably for lack of a better term.

According to the seller he only used it to tow once, and in his favor, he doesn't seem like an idiot-

" I added a european trailer hitch that the factory offered. I bought it from Germany and installed it to tow my BMW track car. I only towed once, but this vehicle with the sport suspension (factory sport airbags in rear) was awesome to tow with. It got 16.5mpg towing and this was with the automatic transmission. The hitch and car are good for 2200kg (4840lbs). "

With that said, its a cool car, but also a little more than I would pay for a MT 540T with 200k

With that said, its a cool car, but also a little more than I would pay for a MT 540T with 200k

that car is only rated for about 1600 pounds if you do not have a trailer brake. It could be there but without more pics I will assume the worst with no brake controller on that trailer. The tongue is totally flat and if it had a brake controller, you'd see it mounted on top. 

I will agree he doesn't seem like an idiot, but the whole "only trailered once" it's also like every "mint" E9x M3 for sale ad I see where people say "never raced, always babied, etc." as if they never redlined the car or only did it once to "see what it would do".

That euro BMW hitch is like a $3000 or $4000 option - buying it an installing it isn't cheap - why would you only use it once??

To me he seems like a non-idiot who is exaggerating a bit on his lack of abusing the car.  

I wish I could justify that kind of price for an MT 540T with 200k as well, lol.

damn you rob.  i would seriously pull the trigger on this and dump the e34 if there wasn't the 'clogged cat' issue he just added. seems fishy? also, what a boring ride home it would be if the car sputters over 4k.

Come on, what an adventure.  I drove my roadster back from Houston with a bad CSB and roasted the alternator in Arkansas.   Think of the BMW stories you can tell your kids.

With a 6spd, <4k you would need to keep it under 120.
