As for the 318is, if you were gonna swap the motor anyway, wouldn't it be a good idea to buy a car simply for the chassis and disregard the motor's condition? Or do you need to drive it before the swap?

^If the motor is low miles and being taken out, it gives more money back to go towards the swap=P

^ true dat. But with a 318is, most owners would swap in an M50 rather than look for a low mileage M42. Those motors are cheap enough to rebuild that they rarely get swapped.
