Anyone here know what a stall converter is/was in an automatic transmission?

Lets you rev up so you can launch higher I think.  But automatics are evil and a thing to be swapped into the scrap pile!

Not all automatics.....I had a turbo 400 with a manual shift valve body and a torque converter from a Vega and man did that thing shift. Sideways shifting into second at 60.
