Its ok. Something in the engine just let loose. Sounds likea bag of marbles are rattling around in the head
At higher revs? M20? ROCKER
-
-
It is an m42.
Is it timing related again?
betcha timing chain guides of some sorts.
-
I bet its the same thing again earl
-
Sorry to hear that. I don't imagine that being fun, but at least it will go faster this time around with all the hardware loosened up and knowing how to get to it all.
I know you mentioned wanting to keep the engine stock but there have been quite a few 6 cylinder engines for sale in the area recently.

AKA 24v swap

I raise a big middle finger to the broke ass dude that stole your timing kit!!
this actually happen?
-
Fuck yea it did. I would swap a 24 valve in it in a heartbeat but I don't have the funds to do so right now. I would even consider putting and I'm 20 minutes but also don't really have the cash and all the parts to do it
-
I mean if somebody needs a kidney or half of my liver I would give it to them if they would put a 24 valve in my e30 for me

-
Took my engine apart and back together tonight. Swapped cams, trays and lifters from my old head and the knock is gone. Still have a weird rattling. Think the chain is stretched. Fuck it for now I guess lol
-
How did the sprockets look? Have you run the engine for a while? When i fire up my m50 after storage it rattles badly and you need to hold the rpms around 3k for a minute or two
This doesn't seem normal mr Menard I think it's time for u to order a vanos rebuild kit and I'm thinking about doing mine when I service my cooling system on the e46.
-
all the guides are brand new the sprockets look good the bearings in the idler gear look good everything looks good. I'm just not sure what's causing that rattling. It sounds like the chain. Maybe the one lifter that failed causing the knock has a blocked oil passage leading to it partially starving that lifter of oil until it fails. I'm not positive though I'm just going to run it and see what happens. If it does it again then I know there is a crazy issue.

The oil drains out of the lifters after sitting, it's not the vanos. It can sit for a couple weeks with no problem, it's just when it sits for several months over winter. The vq30 in our Maxima rattles for a couple seconds if you leave it for a week...
